What problems can arise within Social Media?
Social media is an excellent platform for sharing, creating, and exchanging ideas and information in virtual communities. However, the spread of social media has opened doors to many issues. A few of those issues include privacy, misinformation, bullying, and oversharing. These issues occur when people who post on social media do not use an ethical perspective.
An article called "The Story of Amanda Todd" demonstrates the outcome of a girl who experienced cyber bullying. In summary, 15-year-old Amanda Todd's pictures were leaked online by a stalker. This led to her getting bullied at school and online. That's when Amanda and her family decided to move schools. This gave Amanda a break and new friends but unfortunately, her stalker found her again and sent her pictures out to her new school. This second time that her pictures are leaked the bullying is worse than it was before as Amanda gets jumped by multiple students at her new school. The bullying would follow her home again as she would receive unethical death threats and inappropriate messages on her social media pages. On November 27th, 2013 Amanda Todd ended her life.
For this reason, it is important for people to know how to approach ideas, comments, and situations on social media with an ethical perspective. Ethical perspectives allow people to ask questions about if the decision they are making is the best and most fair decision. In conclusion, I feel that good intentions should always be set when posting to social media to avoid these issues.
