Freedom of The Press

We are all aware that Freedom of the Press was established to ensure that we as individuals have a voice in this world. Not only was this idea set to give us a sense of freedom, but it was set for an important reason. Freedom of the Press allows for radio, television, newspapers, magazines, the Internet, and all kinds of social media to publicly publish information without getting in trouble with the government's rules. This means an average person with thought and personal perspectives can share facts on events or share opinions and new ideas on subjects that are controversial. Freedom of the Press is especially important to American citizens since the modern world is deeply connected by media and the interactions people make with others on these social platforms.

As a Media and Entertainment major who enjoys social media platforms and is always curious about what other people find controversial, the wildly popular app known as TikTok has led me to more discoveries than any other platform. With that being said, I am not the only person who has grown to be obsessed with this app as it has grown to the top ten ranks in fastest-growing apps in history. TikTok is known for spreading information at a fast rate and giving small business owners more business. As this app can spread positivity, just like any platform, it can also bring negativity. Since 2020, the US government has been debating on whether the app should be banned due to it being run by a Chinese company. The US government claims the Chinese company is secretly collecting information from US citizens. Today this debate continues to be an issue and many US citizens are not happy about the idea of one of the most popular social media platforms being taken as it is a form of Freedom of the Press. 

It is known that many average working citizens have successfully grown and changed their life because of TikTok. It has allowed many small business owners to gain overnight success. If TikTok is clearly helping the average citizen, why would the government ban the app? Even if the Chinese government is watching Americans, I feel that is not a major concern because our own government is barely trustworthy anyway, in my opinion. Freedom of the Press should never be taken especially after the many success stories on these platforms. Social media platforms, especially TikTok, have changed the traditional and dreaded 9am-5pm lifestyle. The government should let people be but always keep watch and regulate what is truly dangerous.
